Diamond Care

Now that you have purchased your beautiful diamond ring you will want to keep it in top condition so that it retains its value and beauty. Danforth Diamond has already helped by only offering engagement rings that surround your diamond in 18K white gold or platinum, the finest and strongest metal available, this insures your ring will stay secure and last a lifetime or two!

Everyday Basics

Always remove your diamond ring when doing household chores involving products that contain chlorine. Chlorine is found in bleach and other disinfectants. Prolonged exposure will cause pitting and weakness in your jewelry setting, compromising the security of your diamond. Remember chlorine is an active ingredient in swimming pool and hot tub disinfectants so avoid prolonged exposure of your rings in the water.

Diamonds are natural "grease attractors" so you should always hold your ring by its metal shank when putting it on and off. Never grasp your ring by its stone because the natural oils on your fingers will cloud the surface and hamper the luster.

Keeping your Diamond Clean

Make-up, lotions, soaps, perfumes, and hairspray will build up on your jewelry, cutting down on the brilliance of the gems. We recommend cleaning in an ammonia solution to keep your ring looking its best. Use 1/3 cup of ammonia to 2/3 cup of hot tap water. To remove caked on dirt (such as cookie dough!) soak for 10 minutes and then gently scrub with a soft toothbrush. Do not use an old toothbrush, because toothpaste remnants are too abrasive. Remember a clean sparkling lower quality diamond will look much better than a dirty flawless one.

Expert Advice

We recommend purchasing a small ultrasonic cleaner for approximately $100 when you purchase your ring. An ultrasonic cleaner uses radio waves to loosen the dirt that builds up on your diamond ring. Generally, you just put your ring in the container and the machine does all the work resulting in a very clean and sparkling ring. However, ultrasonic cleaners are not recommended for softer stones such as pearls, opals and amber. Make sure to read the owner manual before using on jewelry containing stones other than diamonds. Storing your Diamond Jewelry

Never leave your diamond ring on a countertop near the sink. Be sure to have a ring holder located by the sink and use it for storing your ring while doing dishes or preparing dinner.

Leave your diamond ring in your jewelry box or in the hotel room safe when traveling if you are participating in activities such as mountain climbing or scuba diving. Even though diamonds are one of the hardest substances known to man, they can still be damaged from hard blows resulting in chips.

When you are not wearing your diamond jewelry we recommend storing it in a fabric lined jewelry box with separate compartments. Make sure that your jewelry is separated from other jewelry in the box as pieces may be scratched from direct contact with other pieces. If you do not own a jewelry box, store your jewelry in a secure location and wrap each piece in cloth or tissue and make sure to put a jewelry box on your next gift wish list!
