The Four C's of Diamond Buying

Understanding the four c's of diamond buying can help you select a diamond engagement ring with the right amount of sparkle for your budget. We can help you choose the perfect diamond by helping you understand what you're buying. Our expert guidance will help you understand the four c's of buying a diamond: cut, color, clarity and carat weight. We will also explain fancy shapes, fancy colors, certification and care of your diamond.

The Four C's of Diamond Buying: Cut

Diamond Cut

Cut does not mean shape. It refers to the angles and proportions a skilled craftsman creates in transforming a rough diamond into a polished diamond. The cut of a diamond is especially important because it has the most effect on the fire, or brilliance. A poor cut will make the diamond look dull even with excellent color and clarity. We only carry the higher cut qualities so that you don't have to worry about picking a poorly cut diamond.

The Four C's of Diamond Buying: Color

Diamond Color

Diamonds with little color are very rare and are highly valued. A colorless diamond will demand a higher price. We only carry the higher color grades so that you don't have to worry about getting an undesirable diamond. However, you don't have to pick a colorless diamond to pick a great stone.

The Four C's of Diamond Buying: Clarity

diamond clarity

Diamonds have tiny imperfections within the stone, referred to as flaws. Clarity is graded by the size, quantity, location and type of flaws. These are natural identifying characteristics such as minerals or fractures, appearing while diamonds are formed in the earth.
The less these occur the better the clarity.

The Four C's of Diamond Buying: Carat

Carat (Ct) is often confused with size, but it is actually a measure of its weight. The price of a diamond is closely tied to the carat weight. When diamonds are mined, larger diamonds are discovered less often than smaller ones. Therefore, as diamonds get larger, the value can greatly increase.

Fancy Diamond Shapes and Colors

Diamonds are fashioned into a number of different shapes, depending on the nature of the rough stone. The eight most popular shapes are round (also known as brilliant), marquise, pear, oval, emerald, princess, radiant and heart. Diamonds have been found in almost every color and shade. Popular Fancy colors are yellow, cognac brown, blue, red, pink.

Diamond Certification

Before you buy any diamond, you should review and understand the Diamond Certificate. This is your guarantee of the diamond's quality by an independent lab. We can help you understand its important features and what to look for.

Care of Your Diamond Jewelry

Diamonds are the hardest substance on earth but they do need care to keep them sparkling for life. Keeping your diamond ring away from household chemicals is very important. Chemicals may damage the ring metal, which in turn, could cause a diamond to fall out of it's setting.
